Intuition is
something that we all possess. "It's the voice of your gut
instinct," Caroline Myss tells us. The great teacher, author,
Judge Thomas Troward included intuition in his masterpiece, "The
Edinburgh Lectures." Yet, in his book, "The Hidden Power" we can
see a lead-in to intuition that we would miss if we only read
his essay on intuition in "The Edinburgh Lectures."
"It is the
thought which determines the quality of the action, and not vice
versa, and since thought is free, it is at liberty to direct
itself to the highest principles, which thus spontaneously
reproduce themselves in the outward acts, so that both thoughts
and actions are brought into harmony with the great eternal laws
and become one in purpose with the Universal Mind. The person
realizes they are no longer bound by consequences of their
former deeds, done in the time of ignorance, in fact, that they
never were bound by them except so far as they themselves gave
them this power by false conceptions of the truth; and thus
recognizing themselves for what they really are - the expression
of the Infinite Spirit in individual personality - they find
they are free, that they are a "partaker of Divine nature," no
losing their identity, but becoming more and more fully them
self with an ever-expanding perfection, following out a line of
evolution whose possibilities are inexhaustible."
Our
thoughts become more powerful when the subjective mind and the
objective mind are in agreement. Intuition is often the action
of the subjective mind upon the objective. It is the inner voice
that stops us from saying the wrong thing or taking the wrong
action. It is also the inner voice which guides us to say the
right thing and take the right action. From Judge Troward; "The
only general principles that I can deduce from my own experience
is that when, in spite of all appearances pointing in the
direction of a certain line of conduct, there is still a
persistent feeling that it should not be followed, in the
majority of instances it will be found that the argument of the
objective mind, however correct on the facts objectively known,
was deficient from ignorance of facts which could not be
objectively known at the time, but which were known to the
intuitive faculty. Another principle is that our very first
impression or feeling on any subject is generally correct."
