We
are all familiar with the adage, don't believe what people say,
believe what they do. I have been thinking about this a lot
lately as we move through this pandemic and the troubling
political situation here in the United States. One of the
fallacies of spirituality is that we are to ignore facts and see
the world with rose-colored glasses or somehow we are not
spiritual.
I was on Jury Duty a couple of years ago and during the Jury
selection phase, we were all asked if there was any reason that
we could not serve on the Jury. One of the prospects for the
Jury told the Judge that he could not serve because he was
Christian and his religion taught him that he was not to judge.
I wondered which one of the 38,000 plus Christian sects believed
that murderers, robbers, and other criminals, were to
remain free of judgment? The Judge dismissed him from Jury Duty.
I wondered if he did so because he found his reason believable
or because he just believed this man would be a bad Juror?
We have the inherent power of choice, this is the truth. But
choices are made from judgment, this is a fact. We choose
because we judge something as a better choice than the
alternative. Our choices are based on facts or sometimes just
individual biases or preferences. This could be how we choose
our friends or whether we buy a red blouse or a blue one, a pair
of jeans or khaki slacks.
This week I came across a News article describing the crowds at
a mega-church, many not wearing masks or social distancing. The
person interviewed said that, "I am in the protection of the
Lord" and therefore made the choice/judgment, that ignoring
science (facts) was the right choice. I wondered if this person
therefore believed that the 524,669 people who have died from
COVID were not "protected by the Lord" and therefore somehow
their deaths were warranted? Is this creepy, or is it just me?
